Connecting with Connectivism

Connecting with Connectivism

Technology is altering (rewiring) our brains. The tools we use define and shape our thinking.” In what ways do you agree with this quote, and in what ways do you not agree with it? How does social media and social networking play into this?

I agree with George Siemens that technology is shaping out thinking. I start with comparing how a 20 year old think in 2020 as compared to a 20 year old back in 1960. In 1960 there was no internet, or technological tools. Most of the information’s available were text based which takes more time for our brain to process text than a visual content, but now which is in 2020, the digital devices that we carry in the palm of our hands can connect us to any information available, through social media, networking, blogs and news, so no matter where we are, we keep feeding our brain with knowledge and the accumulation of knowledge changes or keep shaping our thinking.

I do not agree in the fact that technology is not shaping thinking for everyone in the world as there are some parts of the world with no access to technology and also some people despite the availability of technology, they do not want to use technology. There is no use of technology means, there will be no effect of technology in shaping someones  thinking who is away from technology.

Social media and networking play an important role in shaping our thinking based on who we are networked with. It could be in a good or bad way, but will focus on the good for my reflection. The technology has made it easy to get connected or have access to information’s that came from successful people, great mentors or great leaders. Another great example on how technology and networking play an important role in shaping our thinking is MOOC. MOOC has enabled professors from top universities to share their knowledge to numerous people which all this is possible with the help of technology.
